Smoking, no matter what you smoke, increases the risk of heart disease from narrowed artery, but a lot of people will continue to smoke regardless.
Many people reason that quitting smoking will make them gain weight. This is partly true because nicotine in cigarette suppresses hunger and increases metabolism, so smokers are usually thin.
Those who keep their mouth busy by smoking and eating can still be fat despite all the nicotine in their bloodstream. However fat or thin, when they quit smoking, the weight increases slightly.
In Thai smokers, 25% of them lost their lives at a young age, and half of them die from smoking-related causes.
Every time you inhale the smoke, nicotine goes to your blood and instantly increases blood pressure. This is why smokers feel fresh and alert. The nicotine will go to the brain within a minute, and the brain will send signal to the adrenal gland and adrenaline will be released.
Adrenaline is a hormone that increases heart rate, constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure.
Second-hand smokers, or those who are around smokers more than an hour per week, have a 20% more chance of hardened blood vessel than those who are far from smokers.
Apart from nicotine, there are also other chemicals in cigarette that scrape the blood vessel lining and cholesterol in the blood will pile up, causing narrowed artery.
The negative effects of smoking also include lung cancer and other types of cancer. Over 30% of those who die from heart disease and coronary disease are smokers. Smoking also results in emphysema, which is a great suffering because the patient will experience shortness of breath. This is karma for spitting out stinky smoke and causing others to hold their breath! Moreover, smoking can also cause premature aging.
If you can quit smoking, the benefits you will get are
- Less wrinkles on your face
- Less stain on your teeth
- Pink, healthy lips instead of dark ones
- Food tastes better and smell better
- Less chance for erectile dysfunction
- Less osteoporosis
- Slower menopause in women
- Healthier baby for pregnant women
The biggest plus of all for quitting is the people around you, and even your pets, will have better health, and everything around you will smell better.
Smokers who escaped a heart attack have the highest success rate of quitting because they have had a near death experience. The fear is enough of a reason to quit.
A patient of mine was obese, despite exercising. He was around 30. He had tried many ways to lose weight but nothing worked. He had starved and exercised, but his weight remained. One day he talked to me.
Patient:: Can I start smoking?
Doctor: Why would you want to do that? You are already at risk for heart disease!
Patient:: When I was in my 20’s, I smoked two packs a day and I was slim. I didn’t feel like eating because I wasn’t hungry and food didn’t taste that good.
I didn’t know what to say to that. Of course, I wanted him to lose weight successfully. I replied sarcastically, “Why don’t you try opium while you’re at it? It makes you even thinner!”
